Prevention & Intervention

We participated in the first ever NH Hands-Only CPR Challenge with a goal to train NH residents. Hands-only” CPR is emergency care for sudden cardiac arrest. It consists of two simple steps without mouth-to-mouth breaths. This life-saving technique keeps oxygenated blood circulating to the brain and vital organs. Critically, research indicate it has the potential to double or triple the survival rate until emergency services arrive.

The training challenge was issued by the Honorable John Stephen, a NH Executive Counselor, who experienced a cardiac emergency while jogging in Florida. Thankfully, Abbie and Mark Batia were walking their dog on the same trail, at the same time, and provided the life-saving CPR immediately and successfully.

At our training site, we began with a seated therapeutic yoga class designed to support cardiac health as potential prevention as per the clinical research.

It was a serene image. Perhaps you can imagine it. Everyone is sitting tall in their chairs. Ever so slight smiles on the faces. Hands pressed gently together.

Many movements, mudras, meditations and breaths later, we feel alert and ready to welcome the outstanding team at Merrimack Fire Rescue who trained everyone in the technique.

Initial nervous glances were exchanged amongst the sincere group, as might be expected. By the end of the morning, confidence was built and skills were acquired in prevention and intervention!

The members of this skillful training team included Assistant Chief Kevin O’Brien, Captain Rick Gagne, Jamison Mayhew, Zach Balfour and Taylor Seppalla.

“Heart”-felt thanks to Merrimack Fire Rescue, YogaCaps volunteers Geri Bostch, Mary Jane and Jack Warren and John Syzszlo, as well as the Merrimack Senior Citizens Club and all of the amazing attendees, The John O’Leary Center, and of course, NH Executive Councilor John Stephen, Chris Maidment and Jason Preston of GMR/AMR.
